Critics:

“Another artist who quietly works in the traditional style is Nguyen Xuan Viet (b.1949). His name is known to few people but his art is mature, having its own place within the sphere of Southern artistic life. One can detect the influence of Nguyen Gia Tri in his handling of spatial rhythm in large-scale lacquer works, his way of treating painting as if it is an architectural project. One can also see the influence of Nguyen Sang in his figurative perspective. Nevertheless, Viet’s paintings have their own obsession that is manifested by the presence of traditional motifs, by the chaos of forms in the midst of falling or crashing and by an artistic atmosphere that is full of varying timbres. Perhaps the painter works like a believer in his private religious passion and finds in art a relief for all that is hopeless and dark. The painting becomes more abstract when the idea behind it moves further into a romantic, illusory place that is far away from everyday life.”
